PHONG NHA - QUANG BÌNH

Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park is located in Quảng Bình Province, central Vietnam, approximately 50 km northwest of Đồng Hới City and nearly 500 km south of Hanoi. This exceptional destination is one of the country’s most remarkable natural treasures.

Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng lies in the heart of a vast limestone mountain region formed hundreds of millions of years ago. The park was established to protect one of the world’s largest karst systems, featuring around 300 caves, underground rivers, spectacular limestone formations and exceptionally rich biodiversity.

The beauty of the park lies in the harmony between its majestic mountains, tropical forests, deep caves and underground rivers. Some

of the region’s caves are among the most impressive in Vietnam, attracting explorers, scientists and nature-loving travellers from around the world.

The park is also home to numerous rare species of plants and animals, several of which are listed in Vietnam’s Red Data Book and the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Thanks to its extraordinary geological heritage, rich biodiversity and breathtaking landscapes, Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng has become a must-visit destination for travellers wishing to discover the wild and majestic beauty of central Vietnam.

Tiên Son Cave

Tiên Sơn Cave is one of the remarkable caves in the Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng region, located approximately 45 km northwest of Đồng Hới City. Also known as the “Dry Cave”, it is one of the most famous attractions in the national park.

The entrance to Tiên Sơn Cave is situated about 1,000 metres from the entrance to Phong Nha Cave, at an elevation of nearly 200 metres above sea level. The cave stretches for approximately 980 metres, although only part of it is accessible to visitors. About 400 metres from the entrance, a deep chasm and an underground cavern make further exploration more dangerous. For safety reasons, visitors are therefore restricted to the first section of the cave.

Discovered in 1935, Tiên Sơn was originally called “Fairy Cave” by local people because of its mysterious, almost otherworldly beauty. It was later named “Dry Cave” to distinguish it from Phong Nha Cave, which is a water cave explored by boat.

Inside the cave, visitors can admire magnificent stalactites and stalagmites in a variety of shapes, comparable to those found in Phong Nha Cave. However, Tiên Sơn has a fascinating feature

of its own: some stone slabs and rock columns produce sounds resembling traditional gongs and drums when gently tapped.

According to speleological studies, the cave is believed to have formed tens of millions of years ago, when water gradually carved and eroded the limestone mountains of Kẻ Bàng. Subsequent geological movements reshaped the landscape, gradually separating the dry section, which became Tiên Sơn Cave, from the section containing an underground river, now known as Phong Nha Cave.

Although the two caves are located close to each other, they are not directly connected. Near the entrance to Tiên Sơn Cave, local people have also discovered several ancient artefacts, suggesting that humans may have inhabited the region since ancient times.

Phong Nha Cave

Phong Nha Cave is one of the most famous caves in Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park. Stretching for nearly 8 km, it captivates visitors with its vast network of chambers, underground rivers, magnificent stalactites and cool, mysterious atmosphere.

The name “Phong Nha” is often interpreted as “wind blowing through teeth”, referring to the rock formations near the cave entrance that resemble a row of natural teeth. This poetic image perfectly reflects the cave’s unique character.

single cave, Phong Nha Cave is actually just one of the many caves within the national park. However, it was one of the first attractions opened to tourism in the region and remains one of the must-visit sites in Quảng Bình today.

The cave stretches for approximately 7,729 metres. Its entrance, measuring 20 to 25 metres wide and around 10 metres high, leads into a spectacular underground world of vast chambers and interconnected passages. Inside, visitors can admire fascinating stalactites and stalagmites, sculpted by nature over millions of years into extraordinary shapes.

Phong Nha Cave is particularly renowned for its remarkable underground landscapes, including its subterranean river, sandy and rocky beaches, tranquil lake and impressive rock formations that sometimes resemble animals, palaces or legendary figures. Here, light, water and stone come together to create an atmosphere that is both majestic and peaceful.

With its breathtaking natural beauty, refreshing underground atmosphere and almost magical scenery, Phong Nha Cave offers travellers an unforgettable experience in the heart of one of Vietnam’s most spectacular karst landscapes.

Thiên Duong Cave (Paradise Cave)

Thiên Đường Cave, also known as Paradise Cave, is one of the most beautiful caves in Phong Nha – Kẻ Bàng National Park. Discovered in 2005, it was explored by British cavers between 2005 and 2010. Stretching for approximately 31.4 km, it is considered one of the longest dry caves in Asia.

The name “Paradise Cave” comes from the extraordinary beauty of its stalactites and stalagmites, which create a breathtaking natural spectacle inside. According to initial assessments by cave experts, Thiên Đường Cave is remarkable for its impressive dimensions, vast chambers and abundance of limestone formations, some of which resemble magnificent natural sculptures.

Unlike Phong Nha Cave, which is crossed by an underground river, Thiên Đường Cave is a dry cave. Its largely flat, clay-covered floor makes exploring the cave easier and more enjoyable. Inside, the air remains cool throughout the year, offering a refreshing escape from the heat outside.

With its immense chambers, enchanting rock formations and peaceful, mysterious atmosphere, Thiên Đường Cave truly lives up to its name. It is a must-visit destination for travellers wishing to discover the majestic beauty of Quảng Bình’s underground world.
